What to Expect at Neath Port Talbot Chiropractic Clinic
If chiropractic is new to you or you haven’t been to our clinic before then you may be wondering what exactly happens when you arrive for your 1st appointment, and each follow up appointments.
On arrival you will be met by Mike your chiropractor and asked to fill in a few forms which include questions about your past medical history, any accidents and about your current complaint.
You will then be shown to a private consultation room.
During your first visit, Mike will read through your consultation forms with you and will ask a lot of questions, not only about the pain or complaint that you are currently suffering with, but about your past medical history and your lifestyle/job etc. This will ensure the most accurate diagnosis and underlying cause can be identified.
At NPT Back Pain Clinic we strive to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate the underlying cause for you complaint, not just the symptoms. This ensures long lasting benefits.
Please remember, all your details are confidential. No one else will be allowed to see your notes without your permission.
Once your case history has been complete, a full examination will be performed, including a full postural, neurological and biomechanical assessment focusing on the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints).
Should your chiropractor require you to get partially undressed, gowns are made available for you to wear during the examinations and any following treatments.
Report of Findings
This is probably the most important part of your first visit. In clear and simple language Mike will explain exactly what’s going on, what’s causing your pain and discomfort and what your treatment options are.
Usually treatment will begin at your first appointment if appropriate, thus allowing you to start recovering immediately. The 1st treatment is usually just a taster for what to expect in your follow up appointments but is guaranteed to start you on the road to recovery as quickly and efficiently as possible.
You may also be given advice regarding exercise and lifestyle changes that may benefit you.
If Mike does not feel they can help your condition, they will usually refer you to your GP, or another health professional they believe are more suitable to treat you. Your chiropractor will always tell you if he or she cannot help you.
Will it hurt?
Your initial appointment involves a detailed examination, which, if you are in a lot of pain, can be a bit uncomfortable. But, Mike is highly trained, and experienced in dealing with people in a lot of pain, so will be gentle, and only perform the tests absolutely necessary.
As for the treatment, chiropractic adjustments are generally painless, however, if you are in a lot of pain, the movement involved can cause some discomfort. Your chiropractor will discuss what they are doing as they do it, and will ask for feedback from you. If something feels too painful, they will use a different technique to ensure your comfort at all times.
What to wear
Please wear loose clothing. On your first visit your chiropractor may ask you to partially undress and put a gown on. If you feel uncomfortable about this, just bring some exercise clothes, or let your chiropractor know.
How long will it take?
The Initial consultation, postural analysis, full examination and 1st Treatment can take between 45 minutes to an hour.
